ETIQUETTE BASICS
Common mistakes
Doing the right thing is nothing but the reflection of a good education, manners and culture.
PRESENTING YOURSELF
• When one has a personal rank and among peers one does not use it.
• Titles are used by others addressing you; not by you presenting your own name
INTRODUCING OTHERS
• When you are with two people who don’t know each other, you should always introduce them.
• Speak to the person you wish to honor first. Usually we introduce the man to the woman first.
• A guest is granted precedence over the host. Say the name of the visitor first, name of the host second.
PUNCTUALITY
• No excuses what so ever can wipe any kind of delay.
• Traffic excuses & rain are our everyday’s routine and can’t be used as excuses.
HANDSHAKES
Neither flaccid, nor rigorous; the perfect handshake comes firm, franc and brief.
HOW TO ADDRESS A COUPLE:
Mr. & Mrs.?
Outside of the traditional, formal “Mr. & Mrs. John Khoury”, the wife’s name is ALWAYS first when using first names: “Nada and John Khoury”. In social importance, the woman is always first,
then males,
then children.
Married Couples
– Formally: Mr. & Mrs. John Khoury
– Informally: Nada and John Khoury
– In which man is a doctor: Dr. & Mrs. John Khoury
– In which woman is a doctor: Mr. and Mrs. John Khoury or Dr. Nada Khoury and Mr. John Khoury
TECH ETIQUETTE
• Unless it is an emergency, being busy on electronically devices while sitting with someone, is the rudest thing ever.
• Be courteous to those you are with; turn off your phone.
• Speak softly especially if people can overhear your conversation.
