CUPPING
Cupping therapy is a form of alternative medicine in which cups are placed on the skin to create suction.
Drawing up the skin is believed to open up the skin’s pores, which helps to stimulate the blood flow and removes harmful substances and toxins.
HISTORY
Cupping therapy dates back to ancient Egyptian, Chinese, and Middle Eastern cultures. One of the oldest medical textbooks in the world, the Ebers Papyrus, describes how the ancient Egyptians were using cupping therapy in 1,550 B.C.
TYPES OF CUPPING
Dry Cupping
Cupping therapy involves heating the air inside a glass cup creating a vacuum. The cup is then quickly placed on the skin for several minutes; the resulting vacuum pulls the skin into the cup leaving behind a bright red, circular swelling when removed.
Wet Cupping
A mild suction is created using a cup that is left in place for about three minutes. The practitioner then removes the cup and uses a small scalpel to make superficial skin incisions. Then he or she performs a second suction to draw out a small quantity of blood.
BENEFITS
Three thousand years ago, according to the earliest Chinese documentation, cupping was recommended for the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis and respiratory conditions
Today, the British Cupping Society says it can treat a variety of conditions.
• Pain and inflammation
• Blood disorders (anemia & hemophilia)
• Fertility and gynecological disorders
• Skin problems (eczema & acne)
• Rheumatic diseases (arthritis & fibromyalgia)
• Hypertension
• Migraine

WARNING
Cupping therapy should be avoided by the following groups:
Patients with inflamed skin; cases of high fever or convulsions; and patients who bleed easily. Pregnant women should not have cupping on their stomach or lower back. If the cups are being moved, they should not cross bony areas, such as the ridges of the spine or the shoulder blades.
