THE STORY OF BEER
Beer is the world's most widely consumed beverage, and is the third-most popular drink after water and tea.
WHAT IS BEER
Being one of the oldest prepared alcoholic drinks, beer is a drink created by the saccharification of starch and fermentation of the resulting sugar.
The preparation is called brewing:
The cereal grains are steeped in water; Then brewer’s yeast is added to stir up the process of fermentation.
This procedure turns the sugar to alcohol.
INGREDIENTS
Water: Main beer component. Each region has a different kind of water therefore different kind of minerals in the water, which affect the beer type.
Starch Source: Mainly malted grain. It’s saccharified then fermented. The temperature and time of roasting of the grain affects the color of the beer.
Yeast: The yeast produces the fermentation, therefore turns wort into beer. It affects the flavor and type of the beer.
Hop Flavoring: Hops are the female flowers of the hop plant, Humulus lupulus. They affect the flavor of the beer.
Clarifying agent: Sometimes, brewers add a clarifying agent, which makes the beer look bright and clean.
BEER TYPES
There are two major types of beer: ales and lagers. What differs between those two types are the kind of yeast and the temperature used during the brewing: Ales use yeast that ferments well when exposed to warm temperature while Lagers use yeast that ferments well at cool temperatures.
BEER STYLES
In addition to type, a beer's character can be described by its style.
1. Blond are very pale in color, clear, crisp, and dry.
2. Dark are medium chestnut brown in color, its smell is a bit fruity.
3. Cream, a very mild, sweetish, golden style of ale.
4. Red or light brown in color. Their flavor are moderate to heavy and they contain a bit of caramel.
5. Amber
6. Brown contains a bit of caramel and chocolate. It may have a slight citrus accent or be strong, malty or nutty, depending on the area of brewing.
